{"id":1753,"date":"2010-12-05T16:08:22","date_gmt":"2010-12-05T20:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w4kaz.com\/qth\/?p=1753"},"modified":"2010-12-05T16:11:57","modified_gmt":"2010-12-05T20:11:57","slug":"2010-arrl-160m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w4kaz.com\/qth\/?p=1753","title":{"rendered":"2010 ARRL 160m"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That was fun.\u00c2\u00a0 Got a chance to really test drive the 160m inverted-L with the new series capacitance matching installed.\u00c2\u00a0 The capacitor switching is not yet wired, but the match is best at about 1845.\u00c2\u00a0 The KAT100 tuner for the K2 is easily able to match the antenna across the CW areas.\u00c2\u00a0 Without the switching in place, the area above 1900 is not usable, but that&#8217;s not a problem for ARRL 160m.<\/p>\n<p>Operating low power into a vertical is a challenge on any band but has always seemed a larger hurdle on 160m.\u00c2\u00a0 It seems like the Inverted-L is playing very well &#8211; certainly better than before the matching at the antenna feed point was improved.\u00c2\u00a0 There were a few stations that struggled to hear the peeps from the KazShack, but the percentage of good QSO&#8217;s versus &#8220;no cpy pse ltr&#8221; definitely seems to have improved.<\/p>\n<p>Operating was limited mostly to early evening.\u00c2\u00a0 Not a lot of DX worked, just a couple of Caribbean stations and an F2 that must have really good ears.\u00c2\u00a0 The Caribbean stations were booming, so they probably had less trouble copying the 100w. Didn&#8217;t hang in the shack until the EU sunrise, but the F2 was early.<\/p>\n<p>Darting in and out of the KazShack Saturday afternoon, low-and-behold, those three or four intrepid operators cq&#8217;ing into the teeth of a mostly dead daytime 160m band have pretty darn good signals.\u00c2\u00a0 Short distance regional Q&#8217;s, but with low noise conditions a few hundred more stations on the air would make the afternoon on 160m interesting.\u00c2\u00a0 Very easy copy.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Good:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Got a light dusting of snow Saturday afternoon while helping the XYL with trimming the Christmas tree.\u00c2\u00a0 Nice afternoon!<\/li>\n<li>Worked most of the S&amp;P contacts on the first call.\u00c2\u00a0 A few required hearing the call more than once.\u00c2\u00a0 A handful were still deaf to my every attempt.<\/li>\n<li>Two really nice runs where the 15 minute rates hit 120\/hr.\u00c2\u00a0 Must have been spotted.\u00c2\u00a0 The first was Friday evening.\u00c2\u00a0 The second was around 6:00am local Saturday morning.<\/li>\n<li>Gotta love the wintertime.\u00c2\u00a0 Conditions very quiet on Saturday evening after about 7:00pm local.\u00c2\u00a0 Listened mostly on the xmit antenna Saturday.\u00c2\u00a0 Good conditions at other times too.\u00c2\u00a0 Used the K9AY rx antenna for some of the tougher Q&#8217;s.<\/li>\n<li>Great booming signals from the couple of Caribbean stations.<\/li>\n<li>E77, HI, were good easy copy but didn&#8217;t fight their pileups.\u00c2\u00a0 Worked F2.\u00c2\u00a0 Probably would have had better luck picking up a few new countries if the butt had stayed in chair.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>The Bad:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Would like for folks to allow the DX stations the chance to call CQ in the DX window.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s not really that difficult to find a run frequency on 160m outside the DX window. \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe SantaClawz, the TeethFerry, and the EasterWabbit can hold a bi-partisan beer summit,have a group hug, sing Kumbaya, and a collegial atmosphere of good will and peace on earth will break out.\u00c2\u00a0 Even then it probably won&#8217;t trickle down to the amateur radio community.<\/li>\n<li>Not enough rest going into the weekend &#8211; no operating after midnight local.\u00c2\u00a0 Only about 9 hours total Butt-In-Chair time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>The Ugly:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>None!\u00c2\u00a0 Murphy was busy elsewhere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>The Outcome:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<pre>Station: W4KAZ\r\n\r\nClass: Single Op LP\r\nQTH: NC\r\nOperating Time (hrs): 9\r\n\r\nSummary:\r\nTotal:  QSOs = 329  Sections = 51  Countries = 5  Total Score = 37,856\r\n\r\n*\r\n<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That was fun.\u00c2 Got a chance to really test drive the 160m inverted-L with the new series capacitance matching installed.\u00c2 The capacitor switching is not yet wired, but the match is best at about 1845.\u00c2 The KAT100 tuner for the K2 is easily able to match the antenna across the CW areas.\u00c2 Without the switching in place, the area above 1900 is not usable, but that&#8217;s not a problem for ARRL 160m.<\/p>\n<p>Operating low power into a vertical is a challenge on any band but has always seemed a larger hurdle on 160m.\u00c2 It seems like the Inverted-L is playing very well &#8211; certainly better than before the matching at the antenna feed point was improved.\u00c2 There were a few stations that struggled to hear the peeps from the KazShack, but the percentage of good QSO&#8217;s versus &#8220;no cpy pse ltr&#8221; definitely seems to have improved.<\/p>\n<p>Operating was limited mostly to early evening.\u00c2 Not a lot of DX worked, just a couple of Caribbean stations and an F2 that must have really good ears.\u00c2 The Caribbean stations were booming, so they probably had less trouble copying the 100w.
